8’ 3/2 Dickerson 801711. Made in 1937. Weight is 4 5/8 oz. for a 5wt. line. Standard brown wraps with black tipping. Marked in Lyle’s handwriting, Dickerson 801711 – 1937 and on a separate flat Ned Jewett. Ned Jewett was a well known Detroit area customer of both Lyle Dickerson and Paul Young. He was featured on the Paul Young catalog cover in 1956 as shown in the photo below.
This vintage Dickerson has the following features: standard brown wraps with black tipping, cigar grip, down-locking reel seat with wide thread barrel and walnut spacer extending through the butt cap. Red agate stripping guide, blued guides and tip-tops, strap and ring hook keeper, and original cream color bag with model info hand-written on it by Dickerson (801711 4 5/8 oz) and original brass capped tube.
From my personal collection; this is the highest quality workmanship Dickerson rod that I have owned or seen. Combined with that aspect, it's also an outstanding casting rod with a modern taper that belies its period of manufacture. This is a very rare model that, in my opinion, should have been a constant in Dickerson's offerings. Only two other 801711 models are shown in the Dickerson ledger. Modern dry fly action, all sections full length, perfect ferrule fit, straight, and in excellent original condition. $6200
Dickerson: The Man and His Rods hardcover book in excellent condition. Limited numbered edition of 500, signed by both authors. A great resource for anyone interested in Dickerson rods or classic tackle. The hardcover version is very scarce and not many surface these days. Two copies available at $325 each.
For sale- Dickerson net. Though none are common, I would call this model Dickerson's "standard" net. This one is not marked but there is no doubt it is a Dickerson net. Very nice, lightly used condition. Original net bag in place. Overall length is 20.5". Net opening is 13"x8.5". Original owners initials lightly scratched in the handle surface. I replaced the incorrect cord holding the brass clasp with a proper leather strap which is as original. I wrote a brief post about this particular net.
