An Anecdote & Some Previously Unseen Photos

It’s always nice to hear from viewers of the website and I recently received a nice message from Lyle Dickerson’s grandson, Travis Dickerson. Travis is the son of Lyle’s youngest boy, Burton. He found the website and enjoyed viewing it, as did his dad. Other than a couple of questions through email, I have not had the opportunity to interview Travis but would welcome doing so.

Travis was able to clarify one thing I had been trying to determine. The original Dickerson home on Bewick Ave in Detroit is no longer standing, just an empty lot. I was sad to hear this but it is not unexpected considering the state of Detroit’s historic blue-collar neighborhoods.

I asked Travis if his Grandfather fished at all during his later years. His answer was the following:

My dad (Burton) told me his dad really never enjoyed fishing all that much. He certainly did his fair share but a lot of it was outings with clients. He was foremost a craftsman and engineer. His interest was in solving the engineering and aesthetic concerns in creating the finest fly rod that anyone could produce. Fishing was somewhere down on the list and probably more to do with engineering than sport.

This answer is not unlike what some of the family stated when interviewed for the Schaaf/Stein book.
